Compare FOCAL LENGTH (Which is best for your subject?)
Focal lengths are tricky, whether you have been taking pictures for years or just bought your first camera a week ago. Understanding the differences between images taken with different focal-lengths is important, as well as knowing which one you should use for your subject.
This tutorial will help you understand the differences between some of the most common focal lengths.
In each of the examples below, I was standing in the same spot (approximately 4-5 feet from my subject) so that you could see how the focal length impacts your field of vision and your relationship to the subject.
WIDE ANGLE FOCAL LENGTHS
Wide angle focal lengths (24mm & 35mm in the following 2 images) capture more of the scene. They are a good choice for story-telling and life style photography. These lenses are commonly used in landscape photographs.
Wide angle focal lengths create the perspective of being further away from your subject. In these examples I was standing only 4-5 feet from my subject, but it felt like 10 feet. Remember that the wider your lens is, the more distortion will be in the image.
