How to edit and fix backlit photos
It takes practice to master backlit images.
Even if you have taken backlit photos that are nearly perfect, it is likely you will want to make some additional adjustments in Lightroom to make them pop!
Take a look first at the original image I took straight from my camera. This is a beautiful image, but it could use some boosting!

Images with backlighting are often overexposed. Reducing the exposure will restore details to your highlights.
You may also wish to increase your Contrast by a little. Increase the Contrast to compensate for backlit images.

Then, I’d like to add a Linear Gradient to the top right of the image. This will enhance the sun ray that is peeking through.
This image shows how to access Linear Gradient from the Masks panel.
In this case, I moved the Linear Gradient diagonally from the top right corner to the middle of the picture. The amount of haze in your photo will determine how far you drag the Linear Gradient into your image.
Linear Gradient is a fantastic way to ensure that the filter is evenly spread so the effect doesn’t look choppy, but instead blends in with the rest the image.
