How to remove glare in Photoshop

You can find a separate Remove Glare in Lightroom tutorial here if you prefer editing in Lightroom. Otherwise, let’s dive right in:

What is a glare?

The term “glare” is used to describe a harsh, uncomfortably intense light.

The most common cause of glare is light bouncing off eyeglasses. It is a very common problem for portrait photographers.

Photographers also have to contend with glare caused by light reflecting off of water or metallic surfaces. It can also be a light beam coming from the sides of the frame, which creates a haze on the image.

Is it possible to get rid of the glare? Yes, you can!

The good news is you can fix or prevent glare. If possible, the easiest and best solution is to prevent glare.

There are several ways to reduce glare depending on what is causing it and the type.

    • Use a Lens Hood to reduce the glare. If you want to take pictures in the shade, then find a place where there is some shade.
    • Use a filter to reduce glare caused by bright light that is reflected from water, or metallic surfaces. If you want to avoid this, try moving and taking a photo of your subject at a new angle.
    • Change the location of the light source if you are in studio. Ask your subject to move slightly so the light will hit the glasses at a different angle.

Photoshop can be used to remove glare if you are unable to prevent it at the time you take the picture. Photoshop offers many tools that can help. Even if it’s not possible to remove the blemish completely, it should be possible to reduce it significantly.
