Mastering the Refine Edge Tool in Photoshop

Posted on May 28, 2024September 15, 2024

What is the Refine Edge Tool?

Photoshop has a range of powerful and versatile selection tools. These tools are not magical.

It can take a lot of time and effort to achieve a perfect selection when dealing with complicated or intricate topics, no matter what tool you are using.

Photoshop includes a tool called the Refine Edge Tools to help you with this task.

When should you use the Refine Edge Tool?

Refine Edge Tool can be used to select complex selections, such as animals or people.

The Refine Edge Tool is a great tool to use when you have small details on the edges of your subject. It will allow you to work more precisely in less time.

You can also use this tool for simpler selections. You can remove the fringe from selected subjects, for example.

You will need this type of work if you are going to create a cutout, collage or photo composite.

Where can I find the Refined Edge Tool?

When you are using Photoshop CS6 you will find the Refine Edge option on the Options bar at the top of your canvas whenever you select a tool. You can also use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+Alt+R or CMD+Opt+R for PC or Mac.

To enter the Select & Mask Workspace, you must be using a current version of Photoshop. Click the Select and mask button in the Options bar for any selection tool. You can also use the menu to access this feature by clicking Select>Select & Mask.

Click on the second icon in the toolbar to the left, which is the refine tool. Click the key to use it as a short-cut.
