The art of photography is heavily dependent on the light. All of us prefer shooting when the light is diffuse and soft. harsh lighting is inevitable at times, particularly when shooting outside during midday. Think weddings, elopements or portrait sessions.
How can we still create images that are breathtaking in spite of the “difficult lighting”? Here are some of the things I’ve learned over my career. This is the “desert version,” so no trees for you to hide behind.
What do I mean when I say: harsh light?
When I talk about harsh light, what I mean is the type of light that has strong shadows and contrasts. This can lead to loss of detail, and potentially unflattering portraits (skin tones and unflattering dark shadows). This type of light is most common between 10am and 4pm, depending on where you live.
If you use the right techniques and attitude, harsh light can be used to create unique and beautiful images.
This article will explore how to photograph in harsh desert light. I will also discuss a few tricks for when there are more trees and buildings nearby to provide some shade.
