Photographers: Tips on Window Lighting
Window lights are my favorite type of lighting for any and all situations.
It’s true. It’s true. Window light is perfect for creating moody shadows or a soft portrait.
It’s not true that all windows have the same quality.
-
- In general, windows facing north or south provide consistent and even illumination throughout the day.
- The windows facing east or west will receive more direct sunlight in the morning and evening, making them ideal for dramatic photos.
Window light is always available. No matter if you’re dealing with a heavy downpour or oppressive heat, you can still take a beautiful indoor image.
Use a fixed light source, such as a window facing north or south in the middle the day. (Bonus: you can shoot during the day!) It also simplifies the setup. Rotate yourself or your subject and you don’t need to move light stands or strobes. Lighting will be consistent.
