Understanding Photoshop Layers
(and how to use them)
Photoshop layers are conceptually similar to a stacking of transparent sheets. The beauty of the system is that each layer contains an element or object. You can edit and modify an element on a layer without affecting other layers or the original image.
Working with layers is a nondestructive method that allows for creativity and flexibility WITHOUT permanent changes.
Each type of layer has a specific purpose based on what you are working with. These layers can also interact in different ways, adding depth and complexity to the design.
Raster Layers are the most common layer type in Photoshop. They store pixel-based information, such as images.
When you first open an image it appears as a layer called Background. This is a raster containing pixels.
You can only undo edits to these layers by using the History panel. You won’t be allowed to undo the changes you made after you have saved and closed your image.
