Beginners Guide to Selecting Tools in Photoshop
Photoshop’s selection tool allows you to isolate certain portions of an image. This can be used for many different purposes. These tools are versatile, allowing you to alter a background, select a subject to be incorporated into another image to create composite or edit a specific area without affecting the rest of the photo.
Photoshop offers a wide range of tools to help you make the best selections for your needs. Some tools are simple and only require a single click, while others can be difficult to learn. Most fall somewhere between.
Each tool has its own unique application. You’ll often find that you need to use multiple tools in order to achieve your goals. It’s important to become familiar with the selection tools available and how they work.
This will allow you to choose the best tool for each task. You can save a lot of time and effort.
Photoshop Selection Tools are available in both the Toolbox AND the Select menu. To make it easier to understand, I have divided the selection tools into two groups based on where they can be found.
SELECTION TOOLS FOUND WITHIN THE TOOLBOX
It is located on the left-hand side of the screen by default. The toolbox is divided into squares that contain icons representing various selection tools.
You’ll often find that there are additional options beneath the primary tool icons. You may have to click and hold a tool icon related to the tool you’re looking for to see all options.
It’s also important to note that the toolbox can be customized. It’s possible that the toolbox is not configured to include a tool you want. Click on the Edit Toolbox button, which is represented by the three dots in the toolbox, to customize the toolbox.
